Long-duration storage · Project reference

10 MW compressed air energy storage. Above-ground air storage delivered by CIMC ENRIC.

China Three Gorges Corporation's 10 MW multi-source heat-storage CAES demonstration plant in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, completed its performance tests on 21 September 2026. As a CIMC ENRIC reference project, we delivered the plant's high-pressure above-ground air storage system and took part in commissioning from start to finish.

Project at a glance

Described as the world's first 10 MW-class multi-source heat-storage CAES demonstration plant.

The project is led by the China Three Gorges Science and Technology Research Institute. Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute carried out the performance tests, and CIMC ENRIC was one of the commissioning partners alongside the equipment makers and design institute.

10 MW × 4 h*planned electrical storage scale (40 MWh).
10.5 MPa*design pressure of the above-ground air reservoir. Initial design volume: 4,500 m³.
≈13.2 GWh*expected annual output, based on 330 charge-discharge cycles a year.
75–85%*target round-trip efficiency for the MHS-CAES route, compared with 60–70% for conventional CAES.

CIMC ENRIC scope

No salt cavern needed. Standard vessels store the air above ground.

CIMC ENRIC delivered the plant's high-pressure above-ground air storage system: system design, code-compliant pressure vessels, installation, staff training and after-sales support. The reservoir uses standard high-pressure gas storage units developed jointly for the project. The compressors, expansion turbine and thermal systems were supplied by other partners.

01Lower costCompared with pipeline-steel or pressure-piping storage.
02Faster buildShorter construction with standard, shop-built units.
03Safety and qualityCode-compliant pressure vessels from the factory.
04Site freedomNot limited to locations with salt caverns.
High-pressure gas storage

Have a high-pressure gas storage need? Tell us your scenario.

Tell us how and where the gas will be stored and used. We'll work out a suitable storage route with you. Typical application areas:

Compressed air energy storage (CAES) gas storage High-pressure air storage vessels CO₂ energy storage Hydrogen storage and transport Off-grid and microgrid gas storage Long-duration storage for data centers
Planning long-duration storage?

Bring your MW, MWh, discharge hours and land. We'll start with the storage route.

Batteries, compressed air and CO₂ storage each fit different durations. CIMC ENRIC helps you compare the options, from pressure vessels to complete systems.
